“My ESC in Iceland
Before I knew that I would go to Iceland, one of the things I was looking for was to live in a community. Whatever that may look like, I wanted to have more people around me.
So I found this opportunity to become a Camp Leader for the NGO called Worldwide Friends. I would be working in different camps around Iceland that all had different activities. Volunteers from around the world joined us to work in the forest, do beach cleanups, fertilize the soil and to work in greenhouses.
During my six month stay here, I got to work in a few of these camps. I met many amazing people from Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Estonia, Mexico, United Kingdom, Wales, Spain, United States, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, France, Bolivia, Chile, China, Japan, Poland, Lichtenstein and Malaysia. We lived together and shared everything.
My project started in October, the beginning of the low season here in Iceland. The weather started getting worse, more rain, wind and snow, colder temperatures and less sunlight which made the environmental work harder. Fewer and fewer volunteers joined us until it was only us ESC left in November and December. We did the work alone and we were all a bit disappointed of this situation.
Things got better in January and February, when new groups arrived again. We also changed location to a bigger house where we all had more space. We felt like now our experience here truly started. Each group stayed with us for about a week and we did excursions to the Southcoast, the glaciers and the Golden Circle. I got to see so many beautiful and special places. I learned how to organize, to manage and to cope with difficult situations. I made amazing friends here and together we went through the good and the bad.
Nevertheless, I am incredibly grateful for this experience. I admired the distinctive nature around me and the people that came together here because of similar ambitions and worldviews.”
